Better Behavior: Celebrating Milestones: A Special Month of Growth at ATCLA

Clinical Supports Better Behavior

The Arc of Ocean County offers monthly trainings and supports for Better Behavior, rooted in the science of behavior change, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Positive Behavior Support.

We process our feelings and behaviors through movement, gestures, words, and creations.  We also focus on social skills such as eye contact, functional communication, and positive peer engagement.

This month at Lakewood Adult Training Center (ATCLA) was particularly special. After months of weekly meetings, three participants actively engaged with the group with big smiles for the first time.

One highlight was a game of “hot potato" where if the music stopped, we practiced expressing different emotions by copying a picture or mirroring another person.

While in a circle formation, participants were encouraged to receive the ball from a peer, get the attention of the next person, and pass it along. One participant quickly learned to sign, “all done” instead of throwing the ball when she did not want a turn. After three rounds, she was fully in the game, smiling.

Moments like these— daily wins—fill our staff and participants with pride and joy. They remind us of the meaningful work we do every day at The Arc of Ocean County Chapter.
